Becoming Licensed by Examination in Maine
In order to become licensed by examination in Maine, one must register for and pass the NCLEX and submit the application for licensure by examination. The application must be in ink or typewritten and signed and notarized. The following items must be submitted with the application:

- Recent passport-type photo
- Official transcripts (out of state programs)
Becoming Licensed by Endorsement in Maine
In order to qualify for licensure by endorsement, one must have completed a nursing education program that is at least 2 years in length. The individual must have been licensed by examination in English, and must meet the qualification required in Maine for graduation.
The applicant must submit the completed, notarized application for licensure by endorsement along with the $75 fee and passport-type photo. Verification of licensure is also required from original state or jurisdiction, as well as any other state or jurisdiction in which the individual was licensed.
Maine is a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact. One cannot become licensed in Maine if his or her primary state of residence is another compact state, but he or she can obtain multistate privilege from that state. One can only be licensed in Maine if he or she is a resident of Maine or a non-compact state.
An applicant for licensure by endorsement may obtain a 90 day permit while his or her application is processed.
