Becoming an RN in Maryland
In Maryland, one can become licensed by examination or endorsement. Maryland is a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact. This means that one cannot become licensed in Maryland if his or her primary state of residence is another compact state, but he or she can obtain multistate privilege from that state. One can only be licensed in Maryland if he or she is a resident of Maryland or a non-compact state.
In order to become an RN by examination in Maryland, one must first complete a nursing education program. One who graduated from an out-of-state nursing education program can still become licensed if his or her education is not found to be equivalent upon completion a clinical rotation with a preceptor.
In order to become licensed by examination, one must pass the NCLEX-RN. He or she must complete and submit an application for licensure to the board, along with a criminal background check and declaration of primary state of residence. Then, he or she must register for and obtain Authorization to Test for the NCLEX.
In addition to these requirements, an individual educated in a foreign country must submit an education equivalency report by CGFNS. He or she must also prove English proficiency through an oral test.
Those who hold a valid license in another state or jurisdiction can complete the application for licensure by endorsement. A passport-type photo and criminal background check must be submitted with the application. One must also submit a Verification of Original Licensure form.
