Registered nursing is a career for those who want to make a difference in the world. Being an RN offers a challenging and exciting career, as well as job stability. A registered nursing degree makes it possible to work in hospitals, doctors' offices, and other healthcare facilities. Some people complain about the monotony of other careers, but RNs are guaranteed to face new challenges on a daily basis.
Becoming an RN in Utah
The first step in becoming an RN in Utah is to complete an education program that is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, or Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs.
The following items must be attached with a licensure application:
- Division of Occupational Licensing (DOPL) application
- $100 application fee
- 2 fingerprint cards
- New graduates: official transcript
- Those applying for licensure by endorsement: verification of licensure
- Graduates of foreign nursing schools who have never been licensed: Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) certificate
- NCLEX registration (if applicable)
Utah is a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact. A nurse who is licensed in a compact state can be granted permission to practice in another compact state without becoming licensed in that state.
The exam used to license RNs in Utah is the NCLEX-RN. There is a $200 registration fee.
Renewing an RN License
RN license renewal in Utah is based on a set date, rather than date of license. All licenses expire on January 31st of odd-numbered years. The first renewal period may be greater or less than 2 years, depending on how far into the 2 year renewal period the license was obtained.

Why Online RN Classes?
Being a registered nurse is a great career. But many working adults who want to become an registered nurse have an extremely busy schedule - balancing a full-time job, family commitments and other personal responsibilities. The traditional classroom setting offered by most local nursing schools doesn't offer the same flexibility as taking their RN classes online.
Online nursing programs allow each student to fit their education into his or her already busy schedule. Online students can participate in discussion forums and take exams when it's convenient for them. RN nursing students can access their virtual classroom 24 hours per day / seven days per week.
Also, taking RN courses online saves students even more time, as online students don't need to commute to school. Online schools enable busy people to get an RN degree, without interfering with their current professional and personal life.
